Summary
Kingdoms will collide. The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius as war looms on the horizon. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those who don't.
With her heart sworn to the warrior-prince by her side, and her fealty pledged to the people she is determined to save, Aelin will delve into the depths of her power to protect those she loves. But as monsters emerge from the horrors of the past, and dark forces become poised to claim her world, the only chance for salvation will lie in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear.
Aelin will have to choose what and who to sacrifice if she's to keep the world of Erilea from breaking apart.
Review
In the fifth instalment of the Throne of Glass series, we see Aelin, the fire-breathing queen gathering an army to defeat the demon king, Erwan. But, Erwan isn't the only problem that Aelin has to deal with, she also has the Fae Queen, Mauve who is after the Wyrdkeys that will give her unlimited power. With her loyal court by her side and the heir of a shattered throne, she is calling old debts and promises from nobles, pirates and assassins, meanwhile, Manon Blackbeak is fighting a different war against her vicious nature and her kind.
Empire of Storms has left me feeling emotionally drained, and I do not know how long it will take me to recover. So many different things happened that I do not know how to make sure I cover everything.
Aelin! She has continued to grow in Empire of Storms, becoming the truest form of queen she has to be. I did prefer her development in Queen of Shadows compare to here. She had some amazing plans and schemes that left me dazzled, but at the end of the book, I can truly say I adore Aelin. She has become a better version of herself and it is a wonderful thing to witness.
Rowan and Aelin! I mean couple goals! In this book, we see how much Rowan and Aelin truly love each other. Rowan proves his love and devotion to Aelin in this book so fiercely that it made my heart warm. I love the spicy scenes that we get of the two together. I just loved seeing Aelin find someone for her.
Lysandra is becoming more independent in this book and I love how much faith she has in Aelin's plan. Like Aelin she is becoming better and better, she is working on trying to find out who she is and prove to everyone she is more than just a pretty face. Aedion is still being a jerk to everyone else including Lysandra at times, but he starts to develop a soft spot for her and wants to grant her the world.
Manon is a slayer, she is a monster, she bathed in blood and she relished it. But then she started to feel something more, it was Abraxos, Asterian and Elide they made her show her vulnerable side which made her separate right from wrong and fight against injustice. Manon has come to realise that she is more than she was raised to be. She faces an unbearable truth about herself and she discovers she is more important in this game of war than she had initially thought. But she is alone, she is hurt and she is suffering. She is an underdog in the book. Everywhere she goes, she does not fit in, is not welcome, is not listened to, and is not recognised. Although, Manon has changed and she wants to change. What makes my heart warm, is the other underdog of the book, Dorian, is there to ease her loneliness and pain as well as she does for his own.
Empire of Storms is a masterpiece of a brilliant mind. Sarah J.Maas truly knows how to write a compelling story. It has all the right elements in all the right places. This book had my emotions all over the place, there were times when I wanted to cry and there were times I wanted to throw the book across the room. Empire of Storms was stunningly, mind-blowingly, breathtakingly, terrifyingly epic.
